Since 1998, sonance.artistic.network has been connecting lots of artists, techies, and audience by providing Internet tools and running events.
But: do all these users become sonance.members?
This was a major question that challenged us for two years, since the publication of re.sonance.network.futures.005. With the formation of a workgroup in 2006, in regular meetings, and in our Lindabrun sprint, it became evident that there are different qualities of participating, different roles to play, and different motives for being involved in the sonance.artistic.network.
sonance.people:
• sonance.crew
- people actively working for sonance.artistic.network
• sonance.members:
- users of our infrastructure,
• sonance.partners
- infrastructure customers, or
- sponsors (bronze, silver and gold)
• sonance.friends
- invited artists
- guests
- residents
- event participants
• sonance.co-operation.partners
- cooperative and joint venture partners
One way to be part of sonance.network is to come to our regular Wednesday meetings, and to actively promote and develop sonance.artistic.network by sharing knowledge, time and resources in the various working teams. We call this group sonance.crew, and it was the main relationship which we were focussed on over the last year.
People using our digital infrastructure are one group, sonance.members, and those supporting through economic resources or material exchanges are another group, sonance.partners. Those taking part as invited artists or guest-writers, as participants at sonance.events or as temporary residents are sonance.friends. By interacting with sonance.artistic.network on the level of permanent or temporary co-operations your organisation has become a sonance.cooperation.partner.
All these different qualities of participation within the digital community should not be taken as strict categories but as open, always evolving and interchanging paths towards modifying and improving the social sculpture of sonance.artistic.network.
editorial note: this page was transcribed from the Resonance.007 catalogue as an entire section. Some of the information is now out-of-date. Esp., our view of membership has evolved somewhat, as we have a paid-up membership.
