call: Betting on Shorts
Call for entries
Deadline: 15 August 2008
Betting on Shorts:
More than a Eurovision of Shortfilm 2008
Simultaneous Screenings in November 2008 in Athens, Barcelona, Istanbul, London, Maribor, Munich, Novi Sad, Paris, Poznan and several other cities in Europe and beyond
Awards: Special European Jury Prize, Various Local Jury Prizes
The Theme: Money Money Money
“Don’t try to keep up with the Joneses. They have more money than we.” (Dizzy Gillespie)
We would like to invite filmmakers from around the world to submit short films (animation, music video, artist films, narrative, documentary etc.) up to 10 minutes on the theme “Money Money Money”. Think about the poor and the stinking rich, the stingy and the philanthropists. Think about what you could do with a million, but don’t forget what some people can do without a penny. You could explore capitalism, communism or globalisation. If you feel like it check out the price for a barrel of oil. If you think money can buy you love, then make a film about that. And what about haggling, gambling and shopping therapy? Don’t try to keep up with the Joneses but do better than them and send us the best film you can make!
What makes this contest different from any other short film contest is that the audience will be able to bet on which film will be the winner – however, bets must be placed before the screening. Trailers of the films chosen for BoSs 2008 will be streamed on our website and in the participating venues a week before the screening. In addition all contestants will be asked to write a short but informative blurb about their film and give some background information about themselves. This information, together with a still from the film will be available to the audience ca. 2 hours before the screening, when they will also be asked to place their bets.
Entry Procedure: The entry form with all required information accompanied by a DVD-preview copy should reach us by 15 August 2008. For preview only DVD copies will be accepted. If the original language of the film is not English, the preview copy should be subtitled.
Please note that we can only accept one film per director.
Selection and Notification: As we expect to receive several hundred submissions we regret that we can only write to the selected filmmakers. If you have not heard from us by end of September 2008 please assume that you have not been successful this time.
Dispatch Costs: The applicant is responsible for the costs of sending the preview copy and, should the film be selected, also the screening copy. Preview copies can only be returned if the applicant provides a self-addressed and stamped envelope.
Please send your preview copy to:

Screen Festival Oslo
24-26 October 2008
Oslo Screen Festival is an event organized in the year of Cultural Diversity 2008 in Norway. Screen focuses on innovative and experimental works within the field of video art, and this year encourages artists and filmmakers to approach the theme of alterity / identity in their works.
Identity and alterity are usually defined in terms of ethnicity and nationality, but this relationship can be widened to issues such as gender, sexuality, social classes, psychoanalysis, and others. The relation identity / alterity implies dualities such as sameness / otherness or similar / different, but also suggests plurality and diversity.
The festival is going to take place at the Cinematheque in Oslo and other places around the city on October 24th, 25th and 26th.
An award of €1000 will be given to the best video.

call: 25th Kassel Documentary Film & Video Festival
Call for entries
Deadline: 21 June 2008
25th Kassel Documentary Film & Video Festival
November 11 - 16, 2008
For its 25th anniversary edition the Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival invites you from November 11 to 16, 2008 to Kassel to show the diversity and current tendencies of documentary work. On six days the festival presents about 230 international documentary films as well as experimental and artistic works. Together with its further three intermedia sections, the profile of the Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival is unique: The exhibition MONITORING transfers the medium film from the cinema to the context of an exhibition in presenting contemporary media installations in addition to the film screenings. It is complemented with an audiovisual live program in the DokfestLounge as well as the interdisciplinary conference interfiction.
Moreover, the 25th anniversary edition of the Kassel Dokfest shall be an occasion for looking on the past and future festival’s development as well as documenting the facets of documentary work that has been presented in Kassel for the past 25 years. “Most Touching” is for instance the title of an anniversary DVD that shall be published with a collection of 25 international films and videos out of 25 years of festival history.
We now invite all artists, filmmakers, distributors, gallery owners, universities or institutions to submit latest works and projects to the different sections of the anniversary festival program. Deadline for entries is July 21, 2008.
DOCUMENTARYFILMVIDEOART
The documentary film traditionally makes up the heart of the festival. Thus, the festival puts its main emphasis on films and videos exploring their subject by documentary means. But not only traditional documentary films, also particularly short works, that break down formal approaches to documentary filmmaking, i.e. in the combination of experimental or animated with documentary elements, are selected. Theses hybrids expand the scale of documentary work and contribute to a diverse screening program. There is no restriction in terms of the running time of submitted works.
MONITORING
The exhibition MONITORING is devoted to contemporary space-oriented media art in enhancing the cinematographic scope of the festival. 15 media installations and sculptures are selected among the entries and displayed during the festival at Kassel KulturBahnhof and Kassel Kunstverein. The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Kassel Kunstverein and the documenta Archive of the City of Kassel.
AUDIOVISUAL PERFORMANCE
The lounge of the festival presents a program of audio-visual performances and VJ-art. This section is calling for live visuals, audiovisual performance concepts, Live Cinema, sound performances and any kind of experiments produced in analogue or digital media.
INTERFICTION
“RE/CYCLING INVENTION”: This year’s interfiction symposium (with lectures, presentations and workshop-sessions) will ask for the innovative potentials of digital and material strategies and practices of recycling in arts and culture. Artists, video- and filmmakers, researchers, curators, writers, activists and others interested in transdisciplinary exchange on the related issues are invited to join the conference and to discuss their ideas and projects. Call for proposals and further information: www.interfiction.org
AWARDS
A selection of the presented films and videos as well as installations will be nominated for one of the four awards. With the “Golden Key” award the festival seeks to support the best documentary submitted by a young director. It is endowed with Euro 5,000 and sponsored by the City of Kassel. Furthermore, we are pleased about our new prize sponsor for the “Golden Hercules”: The Machbar GmbH, a corporate communications company headquartered in Kassel, awards this prize, worth Euro 2,500, to an outstanding production from the region of Northern Hesse. This year, the software company Micromata GmbH supports the “Golden Cube” for the second time with Euro 2,500 in prize money. It awards the best installation of the exhibition MONITORING. Moreover, the festival and the Werkleitz Gesellschaft together present the production grant “A38”, worth Euro 4,000 for allowance in kind.

call: Proposals - Globalization & Identity

Globalization and Identity -
Open Call for Artworks and Art Projects
In the early 1990?s, two major changes were taking place in Croatia: political and territorial independence from ex Yugoslavia and the first wave of economic globalisation. As you may know, globalisation is the economic model that, after the break up of European socialist countries, with the help of the new technologies (the Internet, mobile networks etc.), created new ways of making profit. Two opposite social processes were the consequence of that: degradation of national economies and proliferation of particular cultural identities.
During 1990?s, the countries of Middle and southeaste Europe were in search of their position on the new map of Europe and thus found themselves in a paradox situation of parallel decentralization of economy and nationalization of culture. The more cultural practice seemed traditional and particular, the more it represented self-identification model for newly formed countries. Although impossible for the global application, the model of so-called traditional culture became the pattern applicable to national culture through various local and group identities. The expansion of local media, equality of dialects, World Music and lifestyle culture are only few of the phenomena that could not exist without tension between global and national.
The 2009 programme of the Gallery Galzenica casts light on questions such as what the difference between Europe of nations and Europe of regions is. Are these countries, once ?behind the iron curtain?, and their great national stories anachronism or last, though unrepresentative evidence that modernism is an open-end process (Habermas)?
Furthermore, is the issue of individual, local or national identity rather an interest of marketing and profit making than the process of personal and social development? Does globalisation actually encourage fundamentalism, chauvinism and xenophobia? If yes, what are possible reasons for multiculturalism? Where has the idea of cosmopolitism disappeared? Is the only choice we have the one between bad and worse?
We invite you to send your proposal for participation to galerija.galzenica@globalnet.hr by 15 June 2008.
Klaudio Stefancic,
a curator and a director of the Gallery Galzenica, and Ivana Hanacek, a curator assistant, will carefully review all the proposals. All submitters will be informed about their application by 1 July 2008.

Ecole du Magasin - Session 18
2008/2009
Founded in 1987, l’Ecole du Magasin was the first formation in Europe to propose a curatorial training program in contemporary art. The program is specialized in the coordination of artistic projects related to the exhibition, and relies on the activity of the art centre it is part of.
Organisation
L’Ecole du Magasin is a professional training program that lasts ten months, from end of September to July. The admission to l’Ecole du Magasin results of a call for application, followed by a selection process.
The program is aimed for candidates involved in the professional contemporary art world. When having completed the program, participants will receive an attestation of participation to the session.
Level
The level of l’Ecole du Magasin corresponds to a Master in fine arts, a specialized professional formation post Master 2, a professional formation in production and diffusion of contemporary art for candidates already involved in cultural structures.
Contents
L’Ecole du Magasin is conceived as a research and production program, developed independently from any academic frame. Teachings are based on the elaboration and production of a project on a ten months term.
The topic of the project is elaborated at the very start of the formation, in the perspective of fulfilling its realization in a professional art venue, taking into account the mastering of the exhibition process and its artistic tools – both technical and conceptual.
Leading of the project
It is supported by the teaching and supporting skills of the pedagogical team, of a professional tutor, renowned and linked to the identity of the project, of theoreticians and practitioners (artists, curators, art critics, historians, editors) who intervene on a regular or exceptional basis, accordingly.
Evaluation
The evaluation of the project is immediate. It is lead by a jury composed of the pedagogical team and the tutor.
Diffusion
Conceived and realized on a professional basis; the project is rendered public in conditions of visibility aimed to enhance a wished professionalization for its participants.

call: Artbots - The Robot Talent Show
Call for entries
Deadline: 1 May 2008
ArtBots is pleased to announce that the fifth international ArtBots exhibition for robotic art and art-making robots will take place at the Trinity College Science Gallery in Dublin, Ireland on September 19-21, 2008. Creators of talented robots are invited to submit their work for possible inclusion in the show.
We have no fixed idea of what qualifies as robotic art; if you think it’s a robot and you think it’s art, we encourage you to submit your work. Regardless of whether it’s hi-tech, low-tech, or neg-tech, we’re interested in the ideas you’re working with, not just the gear.
Proposals for workshops, performances, and other kinds of participation are also welcome.
Each ArtBots is a bit different; the location changes and we invite new humans to co-curate the show with us. We hope that by changing the specifics of the show each year we can keep it accessible to a diverse range of people, works, and ideas.
This year’s co-curators are:
Warren Ellis: author of novels, comics, video games, and screenplays;
blogger and creator of numerous online forums
Marie Redmond: computer science professor; director of the MSc
Multimedia Systems Course, Trinity College; entrepreneur
Douglas Repetto: artist and teacher; Director of Research at the
Columbia University Computer Music Center, director and founder of
ArtBots, dorkbot, organism, and music-dsp
+++++++
ArtBots is a hands-on, community-oriented show, run by and for artists.
Participating artists install their own work and are present during the
show to meet one another, maintain their pieces, and talk with visitors.
Each participant is given a 1000 Euro artist fee to help cover the cost
of attending. All costs, including shipping, travel, lodging, meals,
etc., are the responsibility of the artist. While we cannot provide
additional monetary resources, we are happy to provide invitation
letters or other documents that might help artists with local grant
applications, sponsorships, etc.
Important Dates:
Deadline for entries: 1 May
Acceptance notifications sent: 2 June
Artists confirm participation by: 16 June
Show load-in and installation: 16-18 September
Show open: 19-21 September
Breakdown and load-out: 22 September
+++++++
To submit your work for consideration for ArtBots 2008, please fill out
the following form. In addition to the form, please provide
documentation (photos, video, sounds, plans, etc.) and a brief statement
describing the work and your motivation for creating it. Tell us why the
work is interesting, and help us understand how it fits in the context
of the ArtBots show.
We strongly encourage you to create a website with your entry materials
in an easily viewable form. This will allow the three geographically
separated curators to view the materials as you intend them to be viewed.
Email attachments, printed documentation, slides, videotapes, CD-ROMs,
and DVDs are all acceptable as documentation, but will make it more
difficult for the curators to view your work. We regret that we cannot
return submitted materials, so please do not send originals.
Please send your entry form and documentation to:

What is the Science Gallery?
The Science Gallery is a new public science centre located in the heart
of Dublin city. A place where ideas meet, the Gallery will bring
together people with diverse interests and backgrounds including
creative thinkers and young innovators, to connect, explore, create,
debate and share ideas on science, technology and the arts, opening up
these fields to new audiences.
The Science Gallery ’space’ consists of a 144-seater multimedia theatre,
studios, café and stunning open gallery space, providing an ideal
location for new emerging creative talent to be discovered through a
programme of changing exhibitions, events and workshops.
With a target audience of 15 year olds up and an emphasis on creating a
collaborative community, the Science Gallery, which launched in February
2008 with LIGHTWAVE, a nine-day festival exploring the art and science
of controlling light already has over 2000 members. For more information
